The Northern Maidenhair Fern is native to the eastern half of the US and prefers rich, slightly acid to slightly basic soil in shade that is always moist but not wet. It grows along the banks of streams and on forested hillsides and coves that receive low direct sunlight. It is long rhizomous and typically reaches heights of 15-25 inches. |

Athyrium asplenioides (Southern Lady Fern)
The Southern lady Fern has an ascending rhizome that forms a grouping of fronds to 30 inches tall. The stipes and costae vary in color from light green to medium burgundy. The fern is excellent for borders and background plantings in shady to part sunny forests and stream and pond banks. |

Ebony Spleenwort is a widespread fern in the eastern half of the US and occurs in diverse habitats from shady stream banks to sunny, rocky, and dry slopes in many soil types. It is grows to about 15 " tall and is evergreen. A. platyneuron is an excellent rock garden fern. Fertile fronds are often taller and more erect than sterile fronds. Pinna are mostly alternate and have distinct auricles on the acroscopic half near the stipe. |

Cystopteris bulbifera (Bulblet Fern)
The Bulblet Fern is a low-growing deciduous fern that reproduces vegetatively with buds (bulbils) that form on the abaxial surface of the long ( up to 16 inches) narrow fronds. When mature, the buds fall off and root to form new plants. Sometimes new plants sprout from the bulbils when they are still attached to the parent plant. This unusual fern prefers moist soil with a circumneutral pH. in a part shade environment. |
