Organic Matter: The majority of native ferns need soil with substantial organic matter.

Rocks: Many of our native ferns enjoy a rocky environment. Some demand to grow around, on, or against rocks. Some ferns are specific to acidic or alkaline rocks. Some ferns like all rocks.

Aspect: This refers to directional exposure, i.e., N, NE, NW (cooler, moister, shadier), and S, SE, E, SW, and W (warmer, drier, sunnier).
