Fern Species Availability
General
Crow Dog Native Ferns and Gardens grows native ferns exclusively through spore propagation. The availability of 98-cell plug trays, 4" ferns, and gallon ferns depends on spore propagation cycles. With the exception of Osmundaceae ferns, spores are sown from mid-summer to late fall depending on the maturity of species spores. Young sporophytes are reared in a heated lab over the winter in gametophyte containers and subsequently in plug trays.

Orders for plug trays must be made no later than March 1st of each year. Plug trays will be shipped from early spring to mid-summer depending on when roots are fully developed.

All other plug trays are potted up to 4" pots beginning in early March. These new crop 4" pots will be sold the after their root systems and tops expand. Some of the 4" ferns of all species are potted up to gallon size in early summer and sold as gallon ferns in the summer and fall after growth increases. 4" and gallon ferns that are not sold during the first year of growth are overwintered in unheated greenhouses or in outdoor spaces for sale in the subsequent year.
